Loose Diamonds Gemstones -> Tapers Tapers

This diamond cut is called so because it is slightly tapered towards the end. This results in beautiful facets on the diamond that generate a lot of brilliancy. This cut is made from a straight baguette that is rectangular in shape. Hence the only difference between a baguette and a taper cut is the tapered look which is acquired from polishing its bottom.

PEARLS OF ARABIA

Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) Coloured Stones and Pearls division has unveiled its ambitious plans for “Pearls of Arabia,” a landmark project that will feature a high-quality offshore entertainment, retail and educational centre. This project is the first stage of Dubai’s plan of re-establishing the emirate as a centre for the global pearl trade.

In association with Paspaley Pearling Co. PTY Ltd, the world’s original south sea pearl company and producer of the world’s finest pearls, DMCC will establish a 6,000-square-metre Experience Centre on Antarctica at The World Islands. The destination feature a pearl-themed cultural heritage centre, a performing arts theatre, an exhibition gallery and a themed restaurant alongside boutiques inviting participation from the leading international names in the pearl industry. Visitors will travel to this unique destination by water ferries, transporting them across the manmade archipelago of 300 islands and into the region’s storied past. The facility is expected to be complete by end 2010.

“The past meets the present today, as we look out to the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf and seek inspiration from our heritage to build a brighter tomorrow,” said Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC. “Less than a century ago, pearling was the very lifeblood of Arabia, accounting for some 80,000 jobs in the UAE alone and representing 95 per cent of the country’s total revenues. ‘Pearls of Arabia’ presents age-old wisdom in a modern and contemporary fashion to revive the region’s historic legacy for the benefit of future generations. On behalf of DMCC, I am honoured to inaugurate this landmark project.”

“We are extremely proud to be associated with DMCC as they launch this exciting project to revitalise the region’s pearling tradition,” said Nicholas Paspaley, Executive Chairman of Paspaley Pearling Co. PTY Ltd. “Historically, Dubai served as the world’s hub in the trade of fine-quality natural pearls. Now, almost 100 years later, we are delighted to collaborate with DMCC to revitalise the region’s traditional association with pearls. Together, we will resurrect Dubai’s reputation as one of the world’s premier and most important pearl destinations. Dubai will present to the world the best selection of pearls and pearl jewellery that the 21st century pearling industry has to offer, and will showcase the beautiful history and story of pearls.”

Coloured Stones and Pearls

The global coloured gemstone sector has seen significant growth in the past few years as a result of consumer awareness, resulting in the expansion of the market to volume buyers of coloured stones. Dubai’s traditional focus on gold and diamonds has also gradually translated to an awareness of coloured gemstones. Historically, the UAE was home to traditional pearl diving, and pearl trade was the mainstay of the economy before the discovery of oil.

The DMCC is committed to reviving the pearling tradition in the UAE, in addition to creating a significant platform for the coloured gemstone trade. Accordingly, DMCC launched a dedicated Coloured Stones and Pearls Division in 2007, to provide traders with the tools they need to continue to grow the market.

DIAMOND

Dubai is set to join leading international diamond centres including Antwerp, New York and Mumbai. The Diamond division within DMCC is aiming to establish Dubai as a diamond trading and value-adding centre of global significance. DMCC has been instrumental in implementing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in the United Arab Emirates as part of its endeavour to streamline the trade with global standards and protecting the legitimate diamond industry. The UAE is proudly the first Arab country to implement KPCS.

The launch of the Dubai Diamond Exchange, facilitating the trade of rough and polished diamonds, is set to provide a major impetus to the diamond industry in the region.

The Centre will accommodate every facet of the business - manufacturing, trade, education, certification and technology. Alliances with other players in the trade such as finance organizations, government institutions, etc, will promote complete growth of the industry. The DMCC facilities will also include bringing the best of educational institutions to Dubai, to make the latest in technology and processes available to the local and regional market.
Housed in the purpose-built landmark Almas Tower (Almas means ‘diamond’ in Arabic), Dubai’s diamond community is set to sparkle more brightly than ever.
